About the Event

We live in challenging times, especially after the last couple of years. Lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, queer and questioning (LGBTQ) youth have been struggling with unique challenges (Trevor, 2021). These children struggle in particular with basic needs, including living in a home that is LGBTQ-affirming, mental health in general, access to professional services, being subjected to conversion therapy, respecting pronouns, and the list goes on (Trevor, 2021).

Being a sexual minority can lead to poor educational outcomes, increased incidents of mental health crises, lower motivation, less school engagement,  and a lower sense of belonging (Sansone, 2019).

This presentation will define sexual orientation sexual identity, gender identity, and gender expression, provide some general definitions of LGBT terminology, give some insight into what these youth are telling us they need, and explore ways to improve our field to ensure this population has appropriate treatment and care as well as explore ways to advocate socially for future reform and supports.
